measure your space ,draw a plan (many digital tools on line to help here, to plan your kitchen to scale. Dont forget to mark on exisiting appliances sink work tops, electrical points. what other activities, relaxing, hobbies, drying clothes, , tv, music, how often?
what existing furniture do you need or want to keep? personal objects to display , books, pictures, favourite crockery.
what new ? island, dining table , extra storage for toys, what do you need, you dont have now?
what do you need more room for? (this could be a declutter opportunity?) or a chance to look at what annoys you and needs to be out of sight? storage for laundry , cleaning ultility space, rubbish organizing?
what appliances and gadgets do you need,or want to keep, sound system, water boiler, double oven, hob, do you like gas or electric? Any particular brands?
heat ? Size of room? rads which walls ? under floor, stove?
Space and light? Can you move walls and add windows ?
lighting we often suggest 3 levels , think about were you will be preparing food, relaxing, and would just like ambient soft light?
mantenance, an easy clean is everyones desire but a sterile laboratory isnt , so its working with your comfort level. be honest about how much effort you are prepared to
put in to keep it clean if you are very fussy then lots of open shelves is perhaps not for you, or wood floors that patina with age ? it is possible to balance a practical kitchen to keep clean with
a homely feel.
